DIVERSIFIED TECHNOLOGIES, INC. INSTALLED ILC-CLASS MARX MODULATOR AT KEK IN JAPAN
Bedford, MA (USA)- Diversified Technologies, Inc., (DTI) developer of PowerMod™ high voltage, high power pulse modulators, DC power supplies,
and process control systems, has recently installed a 120 kV, 120 A, 1.7 ms Marx modulator for the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in Japan. This is the first high power solid-state Marx bank ever commissioned.
DTI originally developed the Marx Modulator under a U.S. Dept. of Energy SBIR grant to support SLAC. The Marx bank modulator demonstrates a new technology for compact and economic ILC-class performance. Permitted by using DTI’s solid-state switches instead of traditional spark gaps or SCRs, it charges an array of capacitors in parallel at low voltage and then
erects them in series to form a high-voltage discharge.
According to Michael Kempkes, DTI VP, “This solid-state configuration
allows the capacitors to serve as storage capacitors rather than fully exhausting during each pulse and the switches also provide arc protection
of the load without requiring crowbar protection. The ILC-class Marx is envisioned as a key element of the next large multi-national accelerator.”
